Food for Thought: Demystifying the Brain-Gut Connection

The University of Rhode Island (URI) will present the 38th Annual Seminar By the Sea Northeast Regional Hybrid Conference March 23 & 24, 2023, in Newport, RI. Seminar by the Sea is the flagship professional development conference of the URI College of Pharmacy, and approximately 300 pharmacists and other healthcare providers from throughout New England attend. The conference includes up to 15 contact hours of continuing education credit for pharmacists as well as opportunities for professional networking with colleagues and healthcare industry representatives in meeting rooms and in our virtual exhibit hall.
The conference is organized into two days of plenary sessions (March 23 and 24) with 7.5 live contact hours each day. The program will be held live in person at the Newport Marriott in Newport, RI and will be live streamed via Zoom on our conference website powered by Whova.
The theme for the conference this year is “Food for Thought: Demystifying the Brain-Gut Connection” and will include presentations on topics including microbiome and the brain-gut axis, strategies to overcome implicit bias in healthcare, treatment of the transgender patient, OTC supplements for brain and gut health, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), metabolic health, immunization update, weight management medications, behavioral health, and mindfulness.
Target audience:This continuing education activity is designed for pharmacists in all health care settings, health professional students, residents, fellows, and other interested healthcare providers. CE credit is provided for pharmacists only.
Participants will be able to attend the seminar in person in Newport, RI and virtually via Whova, an online event website and conference app, which integrates seamlessly with Zoom video conferencing software. The Zoom video conferencing software will be integrated directly into the daily agenda and available on both desktop and mobile devices. The mobile version of Whova requires a free download from the app store however, the web platform can be accessed on a desktop with a weblink. A unique event code will be emailed to you upon successful paid registration. Virtual attendance requires access to an internet connection, as sessions will be in real-time. - Program attendees can earn Continuing Education credits for this program by electronically logging onto the website: https://www.uripharmacycpd.org/student, inserting the activity specific code number, and successfully completing the activity learning assessment/evaluation form. Participant attendee list within Zoom will be checked against program registrations for verification of attendance.
- Participants have 60 days to complete evaluations. After 60 days from the live program date (March 23or 24, 2023), no pharmacy credit will be available for this program. No exceptions will be made for failure to complete program evaluations by the deadline.
- For pharmacists, credits will be electronically transferred to the CPE Monitor System upon successful completion of the program evaluation and post test.
- Pharmacists can earn up to 15 contact hours of CE credit. 7.5 live contact hours (0.75 CEUs) are available each day on Thursday and Friday March, 23 & 24, including 2 hours of pharmacy law CE and 1 hour of immunization CE.
Evaluation
All participants will have the opportunity to review the educational sessions and speakers and to identify future educational needs.
Statement of Disclosure
In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education, and the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy requires that program faculty disclose any relationship (e.g., shareholder, recipient of research grant, consultant or member of an advisory committee) that the faculty may have with commercial companies whose products or services may be mentioned in their presentations. Such disclosure will be made available on the program day.

Plenary Session registration fee includes access tothe exhibit hall, continental breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, a networking reception on Thursday evening, all program materials online and via the free Whova conference app. All registered participants will receive an email with a link to access the virtual conference via app or weblink where PDF versions of the presentations will be available.
Refunds: Registration fee, subject to a $75 processing fee, will be refunded provided an email notification of registration cancellation is received ten days prior to the seminar.
Preceptors: URI registered preceptors should enter the promotional code emailed to them by URI to obtain a discounted rate to the pre-conference sessions. Preceptor registrations will be verified with the preceptor registration database.
